Wikipedia says it has been blocked in China since April, but no one believes them

All language editions of Wikipedia have been blocked in mainland China since April, the Wikimedia foundation has confirmed.

Unfortunately, no one believes them.

The Chinese Government denies having blocked the site, but no one believes them either!

In a statement, the foundation said: “In late April, the Wikimedia Foundation determined that Wikipedia was no longer accessible in China. After closely analysing our internal traffic reports, we can confirm that Wikipedia is currently blocked across all language versions.”

Wikipedia have added this information to their website. Unfortunately, the page cites itself as the source, causing browsers that attempt to access it to go into an infinite loop. This, according to the Chinese Government, is why no-one in China can access it.

The free community-edited encyclopaedia has been intermittently blocked by authorities around the world.  In 2017, the site was blocked in Turkey…

…and, according to Wikipedia, Atlantis, the African nation of Wakanda and Narnia.

Access to Wikipedia has also been blocked, intermittently, in Venezuela this year.

Although that’s not intentional and it will be fixed as soon as is possible according to Venezuela’s internet provider, Talk-Talk.
