US President Donald Trump has accused French President Emmanuel Macron of ‘foolishness’ over a digital service tax, and hinted that he would tax French wine in retaliation.
The President, whose favourite tipples include Dr Pepper Pig, Coke less than Zero and Pepsi Max strength, was seething.
‘France just put a digital tax on our great American technology companies. If anybody taxes them, it should be their home country, the US.’
Trump roared, ‘let’s see what happens when Champagne becomes the ‘house of pain,’ when Cote du Rhone is reduced to ‘give a Dog a bone.’
The US is the world’s largest consumer of wine and the largest import market, with France consistently among the top origin countries for imported wine.
The President continued his threats, ‘And guess what? If they want to carry on playing games, then I’m gonna double-down. That’s right, cheese! I’ll put the hurt on Camembert, put up Apollo Creed, and Mister T against their Roquefort.’
