“Bring back National Service” says man far too old to be affected

Historian Sir Hew Strachan has called for National Service to be re-introduced in a special MoD Commissioned Report

The professor argues that reintroducing National Service will provide a much-needed connection between the military and the general public, especially as he is now too old to be considered himself and has enjoyed an entire adult life without fear of being conscripted.

Britain Abandoned National service in 1960

“How sad was I”, the Professor lamented, “By the age of ten, I and everyone else who commissioned this report was stripped of the right to be enforced into the armed services against our wishes, be shouted at like animals and sent to various dangerous flashpoints around the world. I do feel that my generation missed out, so it’s only right we rectify the mistakes of the past, by forcing young people today to shave their heads and wear a uniform for two years, whilst doing a bit of marching.”

Men aged 17-21 had to serve two years and remain in reserve for four

“It’s just what this bloody country needs”, shouted soon to be furloughed News Dump favourite Colin Collinson (54) of Barton Stacey, “and I’m sure I speak for every abled bodied man over 21 years and 364 days old, in stating it would reinforce some much-needed discipline that I never experienced.”

Between 1939 and 1949 the age range of conscription was 18-41 years old

“As a fifty-four year old man, I would support that”, Colin confirmed, “As would all my friends. Except my mate Stuart who is 37.  We’ve done our bit in avoiding military service, It’s time for the younger generation to be challenged harder and find far more inventive ways of not being called up, rather than relying on the abolition of National Service for sixty years like I have”

With reducing globalisation, many European Countries have maintained National Service or are considering re-introduction

“I didn’t vote to leave the EU so that young people could avoid their responsibilities and opt for an easy non-military lifestyle like I did”, protested Mr Collinson, “National service would knock some sense into them, just like that horse did when it kicked me in the head in May 2016.”
